Equine therapy uses interactions with horses to support mental health. Guided by a professional, it relies on the horse’s natural sensitivity to human body language to build emotional awareness, trust, and communication.
It incorporates the horse’s environment to support an individual to explore themselves and create a clearer understanding of any difficulties they may be experiencing.
It works because horses are prey animals—they are hyper-aware of body language and react instantly to human emotions, acting as an honest mirror for an individual’s internal state.
Anyone can benefit from EAT
Equine assisted therapy can support individuals with a variety of mental health needs – for example;
The natural environment enhances equine therapy in three ways:
Being outdoors in nature (rather than a clinical room) naturally reduces stress and makes individuals more comfortable and able to open up.
Watching horses interact with their herd or react to natural elements provides lessons on boundaries, communication, and managing unpredictability.
The uneven terrain, open space, and natural sounds help ground anxious or traumatized patients in the present moment.
No – riding required you will be with the horse not on the horse although riding maybe an option if appropriate during a session.
